CSR Film: Have A Look
Role: Director
The Khmer Rouge’s genocide against the Cambodian people in the 1970s left over 2 million dead, plunging the country into catastrophe. After being freed from the Khmer Rouge's rule, Cambodia was left in a state of helplessness. Today, the majority of the population is under 25 years old, and most are extremely poor. This corporate social responsibility film shines a light on the education system in a village called Baray.
The cinematographer and I spent a weekend living in this village and gaining access to the local government and schools before we could even start filming. It’s humbling to step into parts of the world that are underprivileged and secluded. Reading is something I take for granted, but meeting adults who have witnessed the most horrible atrocities but cannot read is truly moving. There’s a unique enthusiasm that drives these communities to strive for a better future.
